1ELA - The Daily 5
Our Language Arts program is built around The Daily 5 structure, where kids work on a number of literacy activities independently while teachers are meeting with small groups. The main component of Daily 5 is Read to Self.
Math centers
Mondays through Thursdays the kids rotate through three daily centers: Teacher Center, where they practice the skill of the day, Independent Center, where they practice already learned skills, and Chromebook Center where they practice basic facts and develop their number sense.
On Fridays, our class gets together with Mr. Lippiello’s class for a game of Mathketball, where the kids develop their problem-solving skills.
The kids have been practicing several components of the Daily 5. We started with book selection to find perfect-fit books, then practiced building stamina for Read to Self Now that the whole class can read independently for an extended period of time, we are learning to become a reading coach during Read With a Partner..
Sensory Tools
We've created a learning environment where students can use a variety of sensory tools throughout the day. The tools help the students by calm their fidgets and improving focus.
